Configuring the Aging Time for MAC Addresses

You can configure the aging time for MAC addresses, to realize the dynamic address aging function. The MAC addresses that do not appear again in the transport network in the duration of the aging time are regarded as having no route requirements. The MAC addresses are deleted from the MAC address table, so that the MAC address table can contain more MAC addresses.

Prerequisites

Applicable to the 11LEX4, 11LEM24, TBE, L4G board of the OptiX OSN 8800 T16(NA), OptiX OSN 8800 T32(NA), OptiX OSN 8800 T64(NA), OptiX OSN 6800A and OptiX OSN 3800A.

Context

  • If the aging time is too long, the MAC address table may save many outdated MAC address items. This may use up the resources of the MAC address table. As a result, the MAC address table may not be updated according to the change in the network.
  • If the aging time is too short, the effective MAC address items may be deleted. As a result, packets that are broadcasted cannot find the destination MAC address and the performance of the network is affected.

Procedure

  1. In the NE Explorer, select an Ethernet board and choose Configuration > Layer-2 Switching Management > Aging Time from the Function Tree.

  2. Double-click MAC Address Aging Time and the MAC Address Aging Time dialog box is displayed. Enter the value of the aging time.

    NOTE:

MAC Address Aging Time supports three time units, including minute, hour, and day. The value ranges from 1 to 120.

  3. Click OK and then click Apply.
