This topic describes how to configure IP ping tests for testing network connectivity between wireless devices and transport devices.
For WDM and Hybrid MSTP NEs, in the NE Explorer, choose from the navigation tree.
In mobile backhaul scenarios, to diagnose a fault, engineers usually must find out on which network the fault occurred. As shown in Figure 1, NE 1 and NE 2 are transport NEs, and NodeB and RNC are wireless NEs. You can perform a near ping from NodeB to NE 1, a remote ping from NodeB to NE 2, and a pass-through ping from NodeB to RNC. The pings enable you to preliminarily locate the fault on the transport or wireless network.
Figure 2 shows the procedure for diagnosing a service fault.

Add |
Add an IP ping test. |
Start |
Starts an IP ping test. The test result area displays the test results. |
Stop |
Stops an IP ping test. |
Save As |
Saves test results into a document. |
Delete |
Deletes the IP Ping test for a specified row of parameters. |

Stops the IP Ping test for all ports on the NE. |
Parameter |
Value |
Description |
|---|---|---|
Port |
Example: Shelf0(subrack)-2-54EG16-1(PORT-1) |
Indicates the UNI port that responds to an IP ping test. |
Status |
Enabled, Disabled |
Specifies whether to enable the IP ping function for a UNI port.
|
Encapsulation Type |
QinQ, 802.1Q, Null |
Indicates the encapsulation type of the UNI port. The options are as follows:
NOTE:
|
Outer VLAN ID |
/, 0-4095 |
Indicates the outer VLAN ID of the UNI port. NOTE:
If Outer VLAN ID is set to /, the port does not identify packets by VLAN ID.
|
Outer VLAN Priority |
0-7 |
Indicates the outer VLAN priority of the UNI port. NOTE:
If Outer VLAN ID is set to /, Outer VLAN Priority does not take effect. |
Inner VLAN ID |
/, 0-4095 |
Indicates the inner VLAN ID of the UNI port. NOTE:
If Inner VLAN ID is set to /, the port does not identify packets by VLAN ID. If Encapsulation Type is set to Null or QinQ, Inner VLAN ID is a C-VLAN ID. |
Inner VLAN Priority |
0-7 |
Indicates the inner VLAN priority of the UNI port. NOTE:
If Inner VLAN ID is set to /, Inner VLAN Priority does not take effect. |
IP Address |
Example: 126.9.12.10 |
Sets the IP address of the UNI port that responds to the IP ping test. |
IP Mask |
Example: 255.255.255.0 |
Sets the IP mask. IP Mask and the subnet mask of the UNI port must be the same. |
Next Hop IP Address |
Example: 126.9.12.11 |
Sets the IP address of the wireless device directly connected to the UNI port. |
Next Hop IP Mask |
Example: 255.255.255.0 |
Sets the subnet mask of the wireless device directly connected to the UNI port. |
No. |
1 to 16 |
Indicates the No. of IP Ping test. A maximum of six IP ping tests can be performed at the same time. |
Port |
Example: 3-EM6T-4(Port-4) |
Indicates the port that initiates the IP ping test. |
Destination IP Address |
Example: 10.10.10.2 |
Indicates the destination IP address of the IP ping test. |
Direction |
Local End, Remote End Default: Local End |
Specifies whether the NE is the local end or the remote end of the IP ping test. |
Number of Packets |
1-65535 Default: 3 |
Indicates the number of IP ping test packets. |
Packet Length(bytes) |
64-1400 |
Indicates the length of IP ping test packets. The ping test fails when the packet length is greater than the MTU of ports and services and less than the length required by Echo Request packets. |
Timeout Period(s) |
2s, 10s Default: 2s |
Indicates the timeout period of the IP ping test. The ping test fails if the response packet is not received within the timeout period. |
ToS |
0-255 Default: 0 |
Indicates the type of service of the IP ping test. This setting prevents test packets from being regarded as low-priority and therefore being discarded by the QoS mechanism. |
Test Result(Only the latest 500 records can be displayed. Clicking save as can save the latest 10,000 records.) |
Character string |
Indicates the test results. |

No. |
Example: 1 |
Indicates the sequence number of a proxy IP address. |
IP Address |
Example: 126.9.12.15 |
Indicates the proxy IP address. In transport networks, IP addresses of edge NEs can be used as the proxy IP address. |

Description |
|---|---|---|
No. |
Example: 1 |
Indicates the sequence number of an ARP entry of the port. |
IP Address |
Example: 10.10.10.2 |
Indicates the IP address that the remote NE returns based on an ARP request packet. |
MAC Address |
Example: 4C-1F-CC-A6-2F-ED |
Indicates the MAC address that the remote NE returns based on an ARP request packet. The NE initiating the IP ping test must support the non-strict ARP learning mode. That is, the local NE must be able to learn MAC addresses based on ARP request packets. |
