Testing the Fade Margin

This topic describes how to test the fade margin. The fade margin is also an item in the hardware acceptance test of a project. After the hardware is installed and single-hop microwave links are commissioned, the fade margin is tested to check the deviation between the actual value and the theoretical value in network planning.

Prerequisites

The microwave link must be created.

Context

Tested fade margin = Tested receive power - Tested receive sensitivity. The receive power can be read directly from the U2000 Web LCT but the receive sensitivity is difficult to detect.

After an automatic test, the U2000 Web LCT calculates the fade margin and displays the margin on the GUI.

NOTE:
  • In a network consisting of cards with XPIC function and 1+1 protection, delete the 1+1 protection before you start the test. Then, perform the test separately on the active link and standby link. Restore the 1+1 protection manually after the test.

  • Such tests cannot be performed between the local NE and a remote NE of an earlier version.

  • Such tests must be performed from the IFU2 board on the local NE when the transmit power of the remote NE is small.

Procedure

  1. In the NE Explorer, select an NE and choose Configuration > Fade Margin from the Function Tree.
  2. In the Direction area, select the direction to be tested.
  3. Click Start.
  4. View the test process and final result in the Result area.

Follow-up Procedure

If the test result is smaller than the fade margin calculated, increase the transmit power of the remote NE.
